Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.
This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
