Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him admitted that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

Matteo's Unexpected Presence

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of the player's talent. Labeled as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
