EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
