Safety Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made cars.

The minister said that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in every modern cars.

Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those secret talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

The revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
