Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a intense meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
